Supporting families to sleep

Sleep is the number one challenge Australians face (43%) when it comes to mental health and wellbeing as found in Smiling Mind’s 2021 State of Mind report.

It’s an alarming statistic, because we know that a good night’s sleep is one of the cornerstones of maintaining positive health and wellbeing. Forming good, structured sleep habits isn’t always an easy feat—especially with stress and energetic kids in the mix.

That’s why Smiling Mind developed our Sleep for Families Program which has a variety of evidence-based and engaging activities, strategies and meditations to help establish good sleep routines and support a better night’s sleep for the whole family.

The program is divided into modules and focuses on ways to prepare for sleep that can be implemented during the day, in the lead up to bed, when going to sleep, if struggling to fall asleep or waking up in the night.

We know sleep concerns can be a key reason families seek out professional support, you may wish to suggest this program to the families you work with.

This short bed-time story is from the ‘Going to Sleep’ module from the program, it is designed to help children settle their mind and body in readiness for sleep. It involves paying attention to breathing, using imagination and listening carefully.
