Checking in on the everyday mental wellbeing of Australians

The Australian Mental Wellbeing Index provides a snapshot insight into the everyday mental wellbeing of Australia.

Smiling Mind and KPMG launched the first Australian Mental Wellbeing Index report in August 2022. The Index explores the factors that contribute to mental wellbeing and aims to generate a national conversation about how Australians can take a proactive approach to support mental wellbeing.

Latest Quarterly Report Release

The mental wellbeing of Australians drops 0.4%

Key Findings:

  • One in three Australians (29%) report poor wellbeing.

  • Australians scored most negatively in the area of focus and concentration, with 41% of people reporting poor levels.

  • There was an increase in negative responses of stress, sleep and emotional awareness.

  • Australians feel most positively about their emotional awareness, relationships

    and social connections, and emotional regulation.

  • By state, QLD and NSW reported the biggest drop in mental wellbeing.

The Mental Wellbeing Index offers insights into six everyday mental wellbeing domains.

The Index provides a consistent and reliable dataset to inform mental wellbeing policy and decision making. Each quarterly report highlights national and state-based trends in Australia’s mental wellbeing.

The Index offers Australians an opportunity to reframe mental wellbeing and consider how each of the domains measured contributes to overall wellbeing and mental health.

 

Emotional awareness

The ability to notice emotions as they are experienced and to identify and differentiate between emotions.

Focus and concentration

The ability to attend to a task with minimal distraction and for an extended period of time.

Emotional regulation

The ability to manage emotions without reacting to them.

Relationships & social connections

The experience of rewarding relationships, feeling connected and close with others.

Sleep

The level of satisfaction with the quality of sleep.

Stress

The experience of agitation, nervousness or stress.
