How can we better support caregivers and the children in their care?

Each year Smiling Mind checks in on the wellbeing of Australians through our State of Mind survey.  The 2024 report focuses on the mental health of Australian children aged 4-12 and their caregivers.

This year’s report uncovered the intrinsic link between parent/caregiver mental health and child wellbeing.

Key insights from the 2024 State of Mind Report showed that:

  • Parental/Caregiver Stress: A staggering 70% of parents grapple with high stress levels, often stemming from financial strain and challenging behaviours. This stress is directly linked to increased mental health concerns in children.

  • Children's Wellbeing: A majority of children are rated as 'well' (53%) or 'coping' (35%), yet 42% exhibit signs of anxiety. Notably, wellbeing sees a noticeable decline as children grow older.

  • Stigma: Despite 91% of parents being proactive in supporting their children's mental wellbeing, more than half feel apprehensive about seeking help due to social stigma.

  • Mental Fitness: Regular engagement in mental fitness practices proves beneficial for enhancing the wellbeing of both children and parents.

  • Diverse Needs: Specific family groups, such as single-parent households, First Nations communities, LGBTQI+ families, and those in rural areas, encounter unique challenges that necessitate tailored support for improved mental health outcomes.

While State of Mind’s findings showed high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression among Australian families, the findings also showed that regular practice of mental fitness strategies improves wellbeing for both children and parents.  Just as physical fitness improves our physical health, mental fitness strengthens our emotional and psychological capabilities. It helps us manage stress, improve focus, and maintain healthy relationships.  Mental fitness matters because it enhances our overall wellbeing, resilience, and ability to navigate life’s challenges.
